My Maternity Session ~ Lake Worth, FL

I was very excited to have my maternity photos done! The only problem was that I couldn't photograph myself and the rest of my family with my tripod...it would have been to complicated!! So I decided to set up all of my photo equipment (backdrop, light stands, lights, etc.) in my home & had a good friend use my pro Nikon camera to snap away!! It was a super fun experience and it truly put me in my maternity mama's shoes and allowed me to feel just how they do when I am photographing them! I am so used to being behind the camera that when it was my turn to be in front of it I felt so awkward! There's a good reason why us photographer's prefer to be hidden behind it!! In spite of my awkwardness I think we were able to capture some pretty awesome shots!!! In all, I am so grateful and blessed to have these memories of our 5th & last pregnancy!!! This was an amazing beach session ;-) We started a little later than planned and it worked out great! I photographed this lovely family when they were pregnant and then when lil' baby Lila was only 1 month-old. I was so excited to see her again, she is such a pleasant little smiley girl! We played peek-a-boo and had fun! I ran around with my big ol' preggo belly and my big ol' camera and I must say that I love my job & am grateful for the opportunity to pursue it professionally! Grandma & Grandpa shared in on the excitement and jumped into some of the shots as well.

I photographed this family at one of my most popular locations ~ in Boynton Beach. On the evening of their session the rain clouds filled the sky and we considered rescheduling the session to a different day, but ended up deciding to go for it. I prayed on my way there ;-) We photographed for an hour and as I was snapping the last few photos it started to drizzle, followed by a downpour by the time I got into the car. The family was awesome and we all had a great time!

It was a sweet time for them as they were celebrating their daughter's graduation from Medical School, many family members flew in from out of town so it was the perfect time to capture some beach portraits of everyone. I had the privilege of photographing the lovely Gedeon family! I have know this family for a long time but we have never done a professional photo session. We have seriously been discussing doing their family portraits for almost a year & I am so glad that we finally got it done!! They decided that they wanted to do beach portraits & agreed that white would be their main color, with the boys also in khaki. I loved that the girls all had long dresses and big white flowers in their hair. Everyone looked beautiful and I am so happy that I could capture they special moments for them! I can't wait to see the photos displayed on the walls of their home.

The Torres family has been near and dear to my heart for four years now! I've known them since their oldest daughter was 1 (she is now 5). I have taken numerous snap shoot photos of or with them throughout the years. We have discussed doing professional portraits for a while (maybe even years lol) and I am ever so happy that we finally did it! Photographed handsome seven-month-old Harry (a.k.a Squishy) in his yard on a Friday afternoon. He was super happy and very energetic. He took photos with his big brother's cub scouts hat, some of his favorite toys including the long neck dino & the blue's clues chair which has lasted through all three of his oldest siblings. Oldest brother Will made a guest appearance in some of the shots as well. I have had the opportunity to photograph Squishy several times before this (newborn & three month photos) and it has been awesome watching him grow up so fast.

I met this family at church and the same day Katie (the mom) saw a mutual friend (Debbie's) family portraits on facebook that I took, she looked at their photos and my name rang a bell. It's such a small world!! It's funny how that kind of thing happens in such a big city ;-) It turned out that they were wanting to do family portraits as well! So we set it up. We headed over to the beach and I photographed away! The girls had a lot of fun. We let them just run around and be kids! I chased them with the camera, I loved every moment! A few weeks after the session, we ended up getting together to have dinner and hangout! Well, it turns out we both share a very special surprise!

I photographed this fun loving couple on the beach when they were pregnant & was able to capture the true beauty and essence of that special time. We did that photo session at sunrise when the colors of the sky were mind blowing. Well, they have a rather unique birth experience because while they were planning to do a homebirth, God had different plans for them. Several months before their due date (only days after their maternity photo session) they decided to take a getaway trip to visit family up North and while visiting Gigi went into labor early and they ended up having little Dylan out of state. Since he was so little and premature (weighing only 4 lb) they had to stay there an extra 4-5 weeks before being able to come back home to Florida. Needless to say, they contacted me on their way home to do the not-so newborn session (even though he was actually due around that time). We had fun & tried out several creative ideas for a super successful session!

Pregnancy is one of the most thrilling experiences that a woman can go through. It is filled with so many new sensations, cravings, sicknesses & emotions. The little bibs, booties and onesies are so little and cute, all of the toys and nursery furniture is so exciting to shop for. All the while, the parent's hearts are being filled with so many hopes and dreams for this teeny tiny baby that is being weaved inside of mommy's womb. What a precious gift from God! I had the opportunity to photograph this lovely couple who is expecting their first baby. The excitement is so apparent! They really opened up to me and allowed me to capture their essence and love for each other. I had a blast working with them!!

Review of the Nikon 50mm 1.8 af lens

I have been doing a lot of my photo taking with my Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens lately and I must say that I do love it. I come from a past of mainly working with zoom lens, so it has been a learning experience to stick with just one single prime lens. It has forced me to get up and get more creative because if I want a variety of shots I must physically get up and get closer or step back, as opposed to easily zooming in and out. I love how this lens is so small and compact, it is great for low light and and those photos are very sharp! The only downside is that the photos tend to come out soft when the aperture is opened up all of the way, and that can be frustrating when trying to get that extra pull of natural light.

Prior to approaching a photo session, I always ask myself how I could capture the essence & personality of people that I might not know very well. I know it has a lot to do with their comfort level and ability to open up under the pressure to perform in front of the camera and while some people are more natural at this then others, it is still my task to draw this out of the most shy people.

I aim to not only capture the personality of my subjects but also the relationship between multiple family members. I would consider this to be relationship photography that aims to freeze the love in a family for a moment in time & capture it on film. It is the loving embrace, the kiss, the sweet gaze, the laughter & real smiles...it is about who they are and what they share with one another. It is what I consider to be my particular style. It is fun and loving and sweet! It is the challenge that I give myself prior to each session.

Relationship photography is what I do! I love photographing pregnant couples, newborns & families for this very reason and also because it encumbers who I am. I can relate to a pregnant new mom & her anticipation to see & hold her precious baby, I can also relate to the aches, pains and anxiety associated with the whole ordeal...trust me, I've been there and done that four times so it is nothing new to me! I can relate to the mom of a newborn with the lack of sleep & range of emotions, but also the ultimate and indescribable joy that comes with each precious bundle of joy!! I know what it means to be a mom and heck I even homeschool my fabulous four, so I know exactly what goes into parenting and discipline and unconditional love. I bring my personal experience to the table when dealing with my clients, I bring my knowledge & love for babies/children and passion for the art of photography to every single job that I am entrusted with. I want to create memories that my clients will truly love and treasure for many many years to come!

I have been doing everyone else's family portraits and decided it was time to do some of my own family ;-) I actually scheduled this in as a job so as not to treat it otherwise! We got everyone dressed and ready, then headed out to Palm Beach Island. It is usually difficult to get my own kids to behave for photos so we did a lil' bribery and promised to give them a surprise if they did everything we said and cooperated together so that I could capture some nice shots! Well they did and we were very pleased!! We ended up taking them out to dinner at CityPlace and then ice cream after that. They loved it!! I love photographing my kids and knowing that these memories of them being so little together will always be treasured in my heart. I truly love what I do ;-)

I had the pleasure of photographing the extended family of friends who are dear to my own family's hearts! Monique wanted to do a family photo session of her mother-in-law Tensy (for her birthday) so she gathered up all of the family and coordinated clothing with them and we decided to meet on the sand in Palm Beach Island. With the sun blazing it's intensity in the evening, we were all a little worried about the photos!! It was definitely a challenge trying to arrange this large group but we had fun in spite of it all. Okay so it's been a while since I've updated my blog and well what can I say life happens ;-) I'm a busy homeschooling mama of four who lives by the schedule trying to squeeze in enough time for everything...i.e. schooling the kiddos, maintaining the housework & cooking, church activities, sports practices & games, photo sessions, editing & meetings and family time. That said, I definitely plan to squeeze in at least some time to staying up on my photo blog. I'd like to start posting samples from the photo jobs that I do once again! A Fairy Tale Wedding with Athena Scott Photography

This was truly a fairy tale wedding extravaganza!! We went to one of Miami's hot spots, Vizcaya, to photograph this bride and groom's portrait photographs. Virginia and Ernesto were super fun to work with and brought a lot of adventure to this photographic opportunity because both are into extreme sports and were very enthusiastic about creating shots with their skateboards. Taking in this beautiful venue with its castle, water backdrop, garden view and balcony...my vision was to create fairy tale-like photographs that really captured the essence of this new couples love and romance towards each other while utilizing the ambiance.

I am working closely with a hair salon (East Side Creative Hair Salon) who is basically in the middle of enhancing their advertising and marketing campaign. I have been assigned to photograph their select clients for all of their advertising, marketing, hair samples and salon photography. This particular model, Jenny, has done some modeling in the past and was a pleasure to work with. She is a Native American beauty from an Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Ok, so after much thought, I have decided that I am going to go back to my original Athena Scott Photography Blog (as opposed to the merged homeschool/photography blog)...I'm most likely going to create an additional blog that highlights all of the homeschool stuff that we are doing (sometime in the future, probably at the beginning of the next school year.)

My thoughts on this are: that I would like to use my photography blog as a place where I can share my knowledge about this field and also give helpful pointers on everyday photography which would be useful to many! I also want to make it a place where potential future clients can obtain free photo sessions, discount rates and seasonal specials!

Arise, Shine, For You Light Has Come

Rising up early in the morning has always been something that I struggled with my entire life. I remember being a kid and my mother constantly struggling to wake me up early in the morning to get to school on time and the truth is I probably wouldn't have if it were up to me. I guess you can say that I am a night owl and tend to stay up late but I have always wanted to be a mom who could wake up early and get into my Bible, do early morning chores, cook breakfast for the children and just have that quiet time of prayer and devotions. It is something that I prayed about, so when one of the mom's in our homeschool group offered to do an early morning devotion/prayer at 6:15 a.m. I was up for the task! Or was I?? Well, the truth is that my heart & mind were but my body wasn't (well heck my body has been used to waking up late for quite some time since all four of my kids tend to sleep-in as well). I really have had to pray for strength and force myself up (using 2 and 3 alarms) in spite of my sleepiness and I must say that it has been a bit rocky but mostly an awesome transition. Waking up early has helped me in so many ways and has made my homeschool day flow so much better!! I typically have time do our devotions & pray on the phone, wash/fold laundry, make breakfast, prepare homeschool work, make some coffee and enjoy it while I read my Bible or other books and then enjoy each and every child as they arise on their own ;-) There is less chaos and the house is filled with much more love & joy & peace. We are done with homeschool much earlier as well!

As I sat with my oldest child at the table this morning, the Lord confirmed to me that rising early is exactly what he wants for my life. He did this through my little boy, who opened up the Bible to read to me and happened to land on Isaiah 60:1-5:

"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the arm. Then you will look radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth of the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come." NIV

Wow, isn't it totally amazing how the Lord works?! He always lets me know what he wants me to do and I just give him all of the glory and honor and praise for being such a wonderful God ;-) Thank you Jesus!

Professional Photography of Babies

Photographing babies is one of my favorite niches in professional photography! Being a mommy to four precious little jewels, it is easy for me to relate to all of the mothers who so eagerly want to capture the beauty and essence of their little ones during that first year of life. The truth is that these precious little peanuts who once fluttered in our wombs are born teeny tiny newborns and then transform so much in that first year. I typically suggest that moms go for the 3, 6, 9, 12 month "Baby Plan" because then you can really see the progression through the many stages of that first year. At 3 months the baby is usually able to lift up their head while laying on his/her belly, at 6 months they are usually sitting up unassisted, at 9 months they start to stand up holding on to objects and then by 12 months about half of the babies are walking and it is so fun to celebrate that first year with a cake, balloons and my camera!! What better way to celebrate a baby's first year of life then through documenting the 4 major stages with professional photography that will last a lifetime. That is one of the reason's I have made my slogan, "Celebrating Life One Photograph at a Time." Studio Photography - Baby Girl with Props

For this baby photography session, I photographed a beautiful 6-month-old baby named Lexi (I will also be capturing her 9 & 12 months later on this year). Me and Lexi's mommy have been planning this session for quite some time and had brainstormed many fun ideas for shots and props. I packed up my studio equipment (lights, stands, backdrops, etc.) and headed to her house to give her a very upbeat and personal photo session. With clothing changes, diaper changes, lighting adjustments, backdrop swaps, prop changes and nursing breaks we pulled off an amazing photo shoot fit for a lil' princess. Little Lexi strut her stuff on that baby catwalk and I photographed away. Then I edited the photographs and converted many to black and white. Check out the samples photographs below. The Day Before a Photo Shoot

The evening before a photo shoot for my company - Athena Scott Photography, is always exciting for me ;-) As I prepare all of the equipment (by packing the cameras, charging the batteries, testing the external flash and making sure that everything is functioning well and ready to go) my heart and mind start to get into my pre-session mode. Those who know me and have seen me with my cameras can probably explain "the mode" but I'll just sum it up...it's like I transform when I pick up that camera and there is this overwelming sense of urgency inside of me to photograph and after it takes over I start photographing like crazy (I mean I'm standing on a chair, down on the floor and all over the place looking for that perfect angle). The passion for what I do really fuels me to continue to strive to exceed my expectations to excel each and every time I'm out there with my camera!

So the day before the shoot I start to envision a perfect photo session. I think about all of the shots I'd love to capture and about all of the different poses I'd like to utilize for each person individually (depending on their age and personality) and then for the family as a whole. I dream of taking beautiful photographs of the children and their families and that these photographs will one day be precious memories of those fond family moments together. I think of the importance of what I do and that the stakes are high to really produce photos that speak for themselves. I do like smiley photos but for me being able to capture "real emotions" of children laughing and the closeness of family members can be a daunting task and my nerves begin to rise as I think about all of my expectations and just pray that I succeed in my goals of creating real photographic art that is expressive and creative, serious and introspective, bubbly and fun. I truly want to capture their personalities, their humor, their love for each other. I want them to be serious, then happy, then goofy...I aim to capture their raw emotions but sometimes it can be difficult for those who are shy to open up to a photographer who is literally behind a big clunky metal machine. Those nerves inside of me and those strong desires to really want to do a great job sometimes force the mommy in me to come out and then I start to act goofy and do silly things to make people laugh and just relax in front of the camera. I don't want them to be stiff and uncomfortable so I have to do everything in my power to help them to feel comfortable being photographed naturally.

As I prepare everything and just sit and think of these things I can't help but thank the Lord for giving me this gift and passion to photograph people ;-) I'm also so thankful that I can ever pursue a business in a field that I love. Ever since I was a little girl I have always loved taking photos. It wasn't until high school that I started to actually study it though. All of those fond memories of being in the darkroom and really creating photographs start to come back and I smile, then those fluffy butterflies come into my stomach and I just can't wait to get out there and do what I do the next day ;-) I get out my photo books and get inspired. I also pray that I am successful in the task that is set before me and give all of my glory to God.

First Day of Apologia Botany

The kids were super bummed out that we had to miss our Nutrition Co-op today (because Jaedah had literally vomited all night long and just to be safe and not spread around germs we all stayed home). I figured I'd make it up to the kiddos by doing our very first science lesson with the new Apologia Botany curriculum that just arrived yesterday and have a fun nature filled day studying what we learned. First we read the section that defines botany (the study of plants) and the two older kids sat with me on the couch while we did so, then we went over to the table and Isaiah wrote all about what we read - about botany, nature and the use of a magnifying glass in the study of botany. Moriah copied a sentence that I wrote out for her to practice writing letters and words. Then we went outside on this beautiful and warm day to study plants, Isaiah used the magnifying glass to look at leaves up close and personal, then drew some pictures and glued leaves and flowers on to the paper as well. Moriah drew flowers on the chalk board, drew trees and flowers on her clipboard and then made flowers with play-doh. In all, they had a great time learning about plants ;-)

I guess you can say that I am more of a veteran homeschooling mom, than a new homeschooling mom. Well, I have been in this arena for quite some time now with my oldest child Isaiah who is eight (and halfway through the 2nd grade). I started the journey back in 2004 (when he was 3 1/2), so it's been almost 5 years now!! The time has seemed to fly by and in the process I have learned some pretty important lessons along the way ;-) As I embark on a new journey, this time with my second child, Moriah, who is now 4 1/2 I feel a little more confident than I did the last time around and definitely a whole lot more relaxed as well.

One of the most important thing we can teach our children is: a love of learning. In our minds, or my mind anyway, I always thought that the two words were not synonymous. Love and learning have always seemed like oil and water to me as I was growing up...I always hated school and did it out of obligation. I remember high school and college days forcing myself to study and learn only what was needed to write a paper or pass the test, only to forget the knowledge that I acquired. Therefore, in my own homeschool (when Isaiah was younger - 5 & 6) I had a tendency to push push push when it came to teaching and assigning schoolwork because I somehow felt that he needed to be far above his public school peers and so when I felt that he excelled at something than I pushed him so hard and to the point where he despised the very thing he used to love. This is wrong and I caution you to be aware of your child's resistance in particular areas. If they are struggling in a subject, take it easy or just drop it where you are and come back to it at a later date. If your child loves a subject then foster that love for it, make it fun and exciting. This isn't a race to see how much he/she can learn, because every child learns at their own pace. We as parents need to accept that! We should never compare ourselves with that of other homeschool moms or compare our kids with other kids their age because it can be harmful to us and them as well!! I actually had to step back and reevaluate what I was doing because guess what??! What I was doing wasn't working and it wasn't helping Isaiah to love learning...he was actually hating it and resisting it in every way. School was a nightmare and chore and just to get him to sit down and do it was another struggle. I prayed and fought and struggled and prayed some more and learned the hard way that what I was doing just wasn't working for us. I decided to relax a lot more and not push so much, we went with a literature based curriculm (Sonlight) and basically started incorporating a Charlotte Mason approach to things (with tons of literature, narrating, notebooking) as opposed to a mostly workbooky approach and that is when the Love of Learning came back to my precious boy. I had to let go of the control and let go of the idea of public schooling at home. I now let him orchestrate the subjects that he does each day and allow for explorations of topics that we are not covering in the curriculum by just going to the library and researching various things. Now when I ask him, so how do you think the day went?? He answers, "it was great Mom." He truly loves learning now and I can see that he is so interested in history, science, math, literature, etc. I never was and so it is amazing to see it up close and personal. My heart dances and I just praise God because it took a while to get to this point but we never gave up and constantly had to reevaluate things and modify them to suite our needs.

Now when it comes to Moriah (pre-k) I am so much more relaxed and there is no pressure on her to do as much as I did with Isaiah and you can so see that she is just loving it! We read a ton of books, she colors, she builds houses with her math cubes, we sit down and do reading lessons together and that is it!!! We focus on the three R's mainly (reading, writing and arithmetic) and the rest of the day she plays, uses her imagination and sings songs and I just feel so at peace about it. I don't feel that we need to put all these curriculums on them so early on, remember they have the rest of their lives to do curriculums and learn in group settings, I think that the beginning years need to be free to explore and grow and imagine and learn. They are truly natural little learners at that point. Now it doesn't matter what homeschool style we choose or how they learn (visual, auditory, kinetic, hands-on, etc) as long as we are teaching them to love learning each and everyday.

After a full day of activities at the Renaissance Festival with the two older kiddos and their big cousin Lexi, we were all very tired and decided it was time to go home...so we searched and searched for our minivan and after walking for what seemed like all eternity we finally found it ;-) So we sat there and took in this breathtaking view before leaving the parking lot. I stood in awe at the beauty of this amazing sunset and what a mighty God we have ~ who could create such splendor and yet at the same time create such a sense of peace! Thank you Lord!! I just had to take a picture of it on the IPhone (since I seemed to forget the camera at home). Just thought I'd share this ;-)

Okay, since I'm on a blogging roll right now, I figured I'd write another one because who knows when I'll be back to update it right?! hehehe!! Well, I figured it was appropriate to add a blog for the photo business as well yah know ;-) Well, I have been super busy lately between homeschooling, Moriah's soccer practices, homeschool group activities, gym, and normal homelife that I have kind of put off some of the things that I have been needing to do for the business. This weekend I will be working on designing some new business cards (since my old ones are a bit outdated). I also have several clients to contact (1 maternity, 1 newborn) in regards to photographing them for the Amazing Births & Beyond display project that I need to start working on ASAP!! It is very exciting for me to know that once I finish all of these sessions that I will have my photography work on display for all to see ;-) It is truly a blessing to be able to do what I really love professionally and without conflict to the other thing that I love very much - homeschooling my babies!!

Valentine's Day Photos

When it comes to photography I have no idea why my children are the most difficult kids to work with!!! No wait, I think I know why?! Because I'm their mom!!! So I guess this gives them the ability to wine and complain and stomp away (unlike the many clients I photograph each year who for the most part are very cooperative). In any case, this does not stop me from photographing my kids often and I guess even gives me practice dealing with small children ;-) So I decided it would be fun (or not lol) to photograph them for Valentine's Day, since my mom bought all of the girls matching dresses and even got a red matching shirt for Isaiah. So I decided to go all out and have a friend from church make me some red matching bows and a headwrap for baby Hannah to complete the accessories for the shoot. We went in my aunts yard and I photographed away...of course there were several meltdowns, stompoffs, potty breaks, lunch breaks, crying sessions, you name it and we probably had it...LoL!!! Isaiah even told me, "Mom, I wish you weren't a photographer." Wow!! Despite the drama of the shoot we still came out with some lovely shots thankfully!! Remind me not to photograph them like that for a while, whewww!!!

Two New Homeschool Curriculums

I am very excited to announce that I just purchased two new curriculums for our homeschool. After sitting down with Isaiah to kind of reevaluate our homeschool (and surveying his likes vs dislikes). I came to the conclusion that we would make school more fun and follow along more of a Charlotte Mason approach to things. Thus I allowed him to drop the phonics and handwriting workbooks all together and instead he will do more copywork from the literature that he reads and also narrate more for history. We currently use Sonlight for history, literature, geography, readers, read alouds, language arts and science; and Math U See for math. We will also be dropping Sonlight science in exchange for something totally new! After hearing (and reading) so many good things about Apologia Botany I decided to go with it.

I intend on incorporating this new science curriculum (which will have many fun science projects) and we will also be adding in a fun art elective called Artistic Pursuits (which will basically teach the children about art history, famous artwork, and art techniques to create their very own works of art). I will teach both subjects twice a week to Isaiah and Moriah. The curriculums will both have a reading portion and a project portion. The Science will also have vocabulary, copywork and notebooking assignments mainly for Isaiah to do. We are very excited to get into these studies because the kids are interested in learning about seeds, plants, and the study of them and they both really love doing art projects. A few weeks ago we did a project with a kidney bean and watched it grow into a huge plant, this interested them very much. We are all really looking forward to the mail deliveries this week ;-)

Rennaissance Festival

In our homeschool group we decided that it would be fun to ask our children one question: "What is it that you would like to learn about?" After all that is why we homeschool right?! Well I thought it was a great idea to take Isaiah to the Rennaissance Festival because he wanted to learn about Medieval Times. So we loaded up the minivan and took a short trip down to Deerfield Beach and met with some close friends. At the Festival Zay learned about the swords that they used during that time, got to watch a Joust (with the costumed men on horses & women dressed up on the sidelines cheering), saw a Tribal circus, he did a sword fight against buddy Zion in front of a large group of people, saw many people dressed up in the clothing that they would have worn during that time, listened to festive music, he shared a huge turkey leg with his cousin. He bought a couple of swords and enjoyed sword fighting with his buddies most of the time and we walked around and just took the whole experience in. In all, he learned a lot and had a ton of fun at the same time!!

Now on to the next topic of interest...Deep sea animals!!! Looks like our family vacation to Sea World in March will be a great opportunity to fully experience these amazing animals!!! We already have a few books from the library to start reading ;-) I love how we can make this homeschooling adventure so exciting and rich in real in experiences. It really is fostering a love of learning in this household and I'm loving every minute of it!

New Beginnings

Ok...so it's been over a year since I last updated my photo blog. I must admit that I took a pretty long break from all things photography since the last session, well with the pregnancy and then birth of baby Hannah in March 2009 I felt that it was appropriate to focus on getting our family adjusted to the new addition...that and the sleepless nights and the 24/7 nursing pretty much took precedence in the Scott household. In November of 2009 I decided it was time to get back into the swing of photography work and have been slowly but surely working on getting things going again. I am currently in the works of redesigning my website and updating my business cards, etc. I also decided to change the look and feel of my blog...I will now incorporate a lot more of our homeschooling journey and kind of combine the two into one.

Here we have a wonderful family who wanted to celebrate grandma's birthday with family photos over the Labor Day weekend. This photo session was a true challenge of my ability because after about 15-20 minutes it started to pour!!! We couldn't reschedule because several members were from out of state, so we all ran for cover under this lovely pavillion and made the best of the situation. The result was spontaneous & fun shots of the family.

This wedding was very unique in that is took place on 08-08-08 at 8:00 p.m. Instead of a limo the bride drove into town in a black & white 1955 Bel Aire Chevy, very cool! They had a Las Vegas theme going on and then took their honey moon in none other than - yup you guessed it, Las Vegas!

It has been sooo long since I've been able to update my blog & I do apologize. I have many photos to add to the site and will be working on it shortly. A lot has occurred since my last post and so I will go ahead and update you with all of the latest news before I add some cool new shots. After much time packing our house, we finally moved out to Wellington and are loving it! We have finished unpacking and life is getting back to normal. We hosted some family from California for a few weeks and so were really busy with that. We went on vacation to Disney World. We found out that I am pregnant...again :) our son has just started his tackle football season...not to mention I am preparing for the next homeschool year!!! So between practices...being naucious/hungry/tired....photographing sessions...being a mom & wife...taking care of the home front...and church - I have been well...BUSY!!!

I had a ball photographing these three sisters at Okeeheelee Park. They all have big blue eyes, with the exception of the middle sister (her's are green). What's funny is that I was in their grandparents home last week showing them the photos & spotted a photo of her when she was younger (about 4 or 5ish) and her eyes were blue...I did not know that eye color could just change like that. I was amazed :)

This is a newborn session that I photographed last weekend, following this family's maternity session last March. I had an awesome time photographing this baby girl. She was amazingly calm for a newborn and allowed us to photograph her in a wide variety of shots & using many different props. I absolutely love newborn shoots!!! We had an awesome time photographing the 0-24 month-old winners & the 2 1/2-6 year-old winners for the Little Joys & More Photo Contest 2008!!! We ran around Okeeheelee Park and captured some beautiful photos by the lake. The kiddies laughed, played, posed, smiled, and were serious. Here are a couple of photographs from the shoots. Water Lily Girls

Here is a fun photo shoot that I did last weekend of two beautiful little girls at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach, FL. We ran all over the park and photographed by the lake, on the grass, near the trees, at the playground - but the most exciting photos were captured in the water fountain (they played, splashed and giggled loudly), it was very fun and upbeat. This is what I love, photographing kids just being kids and having a good time (the first photo displays this nicely). I also love close up portraits of the face. Each shot of the two girls above really sums up their personality in a nut shell. The first child was happy-go-lucky & friendly, she had a tendency to "ham" it up for me so I wanted to display this photo of her pretty smile and beautiful curls; the second child was very serious & inquistive, she wasn't very interested in taking photos but when we started having fun she came out of her shell so I choose this photo because I love her serious expression here and her eyes have so much depth in them. My Precious Baby

Okay it has been a while since I added some photos of my kids and so here is my baby. I already posted the photos of my son with our cat and my middle daughter (see in a previous post) and so I figured I'd do a special photo session for our littlest one. We did this shoot in our front yard and my little princess was so happy to have on her new spring dress, my wonderful hubby assisted me with these photos (for the lighting) and she laughed, smiled, and was serious. She is my little chatty cathy and loves to babble in her lil' baby language, she says many words too. She is 15 months and a very happy baby, she plays wonderfully with her big bro and sis. She just melts my heart with those lil' cheeks and her big heart - she is wildly affectionate & very independent. She plays cars with her bro & dolls with sis, but her favorite toy is the singing vacuum cleaner (gotta train them young).

Lovely Little Flowers

Okay so I loaded up the minivan with all of the kiddies and we went on our way to the Botanical Garden (a beautiful lil' place that's overflowing with flowers and greenery) to explore and study plants. It was a beautiful sunny day and I had my camera in hand. I love flowers, as you already know from past blogs so I decided to do a little photo project with them. This place is absolutely beautiful, a perfect little getaway in West Palm Beach. I think this is an awesome location for some of my maternity or children's portraiture.

Life's Little Miracles

Maternity photography is one of my absolute favorite types of photography to shoot. It is such a beautiful experience to capture a true miracle inside of mommy's belly-from the outside. It brings back many wonderful memories of being pregnant myself and how it is true when they say that "pregnant women glow" because this client of mine was glowing and just beautiful. I had a wonderful time photographing her and her husband in many different creative ways. We got a chance to incorporate flowers into the shoot and as you can see above it worked well!! I am excited to meet their little princess who is expected to arrive in April :) I hope you enjoy these samples as much as I enjoyed photographing them!

Disney World Emotions

Ok it's been about two weeks since I last blogged and am glad to finally be able to sit down and update it for you. Well, here are a few photos from our Disney World Vacation. I entitled this "Disney World Emotions" because as you can very well see I happened to catch just about every emotion throughout the duration of the day with all of the magic, excitement, waiting in line and sugar rushes. So they laughed, they cried, they stared, they explored, they licked lollypops and jumped around, they played and dreamed - it was an exhausting day to say the least but well worth it!!!! The kids absolutely loved it and we loved being right there with them to experience the joy :)

Photo Contest at the Wellington Mall

Ok so this is my second year in business as Athena Scott Photography and I have been working really hard to get things going and pick up the pace a bit now. For the first year I kind of just got my feet wet and got the majority of my clients by word of mouth and online marketing. Well, this year is a whole new ballgame and I have been up endless hours at night creating fliers, mailers, business cards, my new website, go check it out, www.athenascottphotography.com, and finding new products and coming up with ideas. I have been on a mission to get my name out there and am currently partnering with a children's clothing boutique in the Wellington Mall called Little Joys and More, www.littlejoysandmore.com. We are putting together a children's modeling contest in her store, and will then organize a photo shoot of the winners in her clothing and on location for display in her store. This is an awesome opportunity for both of our businesses to join forces and want to encourage community involvement. If you are interested in signing up please submit a 4x6 photograph of your child to the boutique (it is next door to Dillards at the Wellington Mall). The deadline to enter the contest is Sunday, March 2nd. Please inquire at the boutique for more details.

My Birthday Boy

My sweet boy is 6 today and I can't believe how fast the time went by. We had a birthday dinner and cake at our house tonight with some awesome friends and family. He is such a great boy and is excelling so much in homeschool (for those who didn't know I've ventured out on the path of homeschooling in addition to everything else). He is halfway through kindergarten and is reading well, writing well, doing addition, subtraction, telling time, phonics, learning american history, and plenty of science on plants, the solar system, dinosaurs, etc. Balancing homeschool, my photography business, home, my other two children, and my lovely hubby can sometimes be a challenge but it is SO WORTH IT!!! I loveeee being able to be home with my children during the day and having photography jobs on the weekends allows me that luxery - its sooo awesome!!!! Thank you to all of my clients! So the pictures above are of my son Zay and our beloved cat Riggy...he had been begging me to do his photo shoot for weeks (especially after seeing me photograph his sister) and insisted on doing it with the cat since they are both Feb. babies!!! I had a blast photographing them using natural light at several different angles. I then converted them to black and white to give them that artistic feel. Mind you, these were done in my livingroom and they were just sitting on the couch.

My Little Wild Flower

As many of you very well know I have a thing for flowers. I love to look at them, smell them and photograph them constantly. In fact, I often try to incorporate them into my photography sessions of people. When I look at flowers I can't help but to think how truly amazing God is for creating something so simple in nature, yet so intricate in detail. I can stare at them and just think about the fact that they are not only beautiful to look at, but sweet to smell and soft to touch. When I look at my little children I can compare them to flowers - remembering when they were but seeds in my womb and how they are blooming into beautiful people right before my very eyes. These photos above of my 2 1/2-year-old daughter made me think about how quickly she and all of my children are growning up and how I really have to cherish these years in my children's lives. I am constantly taking photos of them hoping not to miss a single moment (go figure they have a photographer for a mom right :) My favorite photo of her is the one of her holding the flower, it is so full of life and joy! She was actually laughing at me and trying to hit me with the flower...she is definitely my little wild flower!

Welcome to my new blog! I am so excited to begin my journey on the blogspot!! After reading numerous articles on the benefits of blogging I decided to start my own blog where I can share and celebrate life's precious moments with you through my photography. Being a mom of three I am passionate about photographing pregnancy, babies, children and families because I can relate with mothers as it comes so naturally to me! I just love photographing those little ages and stages so very much and treat each child as one of my own! My main purpose for creating this blog is to communicate who I am as a photographer and as a real person. I think that getting to know the person that you are working with is very important in building life long relationships because I don't want to just photograph one family session for you, I want to photograph your life story :)
